Yongin Special City Holds Semiconductor Business Network and Investment Briefing

Yongin Special City held the 'Yongin Semiconductor Business Network and Investment Briefing' on the 11th at the City Hall Convention Hall.

The event was organized to accelerate the formation of the world's largest semiconductor mega cluster in Yongin and strengthen inter-company cooperation networks.

In his opening remarks, Mayor Lee Sang-il stated, "Although there have been ups and downs, Yongin's mega-scale semiconductor project is now gaining momentum, and once completed, it will have the world's largest semiconductor ecosystem for a single city," adding, "With memory semiconductor prices rising sharply and supply shortages, Yongin Special City is actively providing administrative support to increase initial production volumes as much as possible."

The mayor said, "The semiconductor industry cannot be completed with just two anchor companies—Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix—so a semiconductor ecosystem where materials, parts & equipment (MPE) and design companies participate together must become even stronger," and expressed his hope that "MPE companies form a consultative body and work together with Yongin Special City and the two anchor companies through smooth discussion and collaboration."

The event proceeded with introductions of the advanced semiconductor production-linked mini-fab (Trinity Fab), explanations of key industrial complexes in Yongin including the Idong and Namsa-eup Advanced System Semiconductor National Industrial Complex, the Wonsam-myeon Semiconductor Cluster General Industrial Complex, and the Wonsam-myeon Third Yongin Techno Valley General Industrial Complex, followed by Q&A; sessions.

Trinity Fab is an advanced semiconductor testbed fab where semiconductor MPE companies can demonstrate new technologies and verify mass production feasibility. Trinity Fab is equipped with approximately 50 pieces of 12-inch wafer-based equipment.

Since it is built with an environment identical to major semiconductor manufacturers' production fabs, MPE companies without their own facilities can evaluate their new technologies and prototypes in an environment identical to production fabs.

Trinity Fab is scheduled to be completed by May 2027 at the Wonsam-myeon Yongin Semiconductor Cluster General Industrial Complex.

The Yongin Advanced System Semiconductor National Industrial Complex, being developed on approximately 7.78 million square meters (about 2.35 million pyeong) in the Idong and Namsa-eup areas, is being pursued with site development beginning in the second half of this year and targeting the start of construction on the first-phase fab in the second half of 2027.

The Yongin Semiconductor Cluster General Industrial Complex in the Wonsam-myeon area, covering 4.16 million square meters (about 1.26 million pyeong), will be occupied by SK Hynix and its partner companies. As of the end of July this year, the site development rate is 91%, with planned completion of site development in 2027 and partial test operation of the first-phase fab scheduled for the first half of the year.

The Third Yongin Techno Valley General Industrial Complex being built in the Jukneung-ri area, Wonsam-myeon, is a 260,000 square meter (about 79,000 pyeong) industrial complex being developed to meet additional supply needs for semiconductor-related industrial sites. It is being pursued with a target of passing the integrated review of Gyeonggi Province's industrial complex plan in 2027. If plans proceed as scheduled, construction will begin and sales will start in the second half of 2028, with completion expected in 2030.

In particular, the city distributed "Business Difficulties and Suggestions Forms" at each seat in the venue and collected numerous opinions from business representatives. The suggestions will be addressed individually after review by relevant departments.
