Yongin Special City Holds Semiconductor Corporate Networking and Investment Briefing
Yongin Special City held the ‘Yongin Semiconductor Corporate Networking and Investment Briefing’ at the City Hall Convention Hall on the 11th.
The event was arranged to strengthen inter-company cooperation networks in order to accelerate the creation of the world's largest semiconductor mega-cluster being developed in Yongin.
In his opening remarks, Mayor Lee Sang-il said, “There have been twists and turns, but Yongin's mega-scale semiconductor project is now beginning to pick up speed, and once completed, it will have the world's largest semiconductor ecosystem as a single city,” adding, “Since memory semiconductor prices have risen significantly and supply is short, Yongin Special City is actively providing administrative support so that initial output can be increased as much as possible.”
Mayor Lee said, “The semiconductor industry is not completed by the two anchor companies (leading firms) Samsung Electronics and SK hynix alone, so the semiconductor ecosystem that includes semiconductor materials, parts, and equipment (MPE) companies and design firms must become even stronger,” and added, “I hope MPE companies form a consultative body to smoothly consult and discuss matters with Yongin Special City and the two anchor companies, and seek a path of mutual development.”
The event proceeded in the following order: an introduction to the advanced semiconductor mass-production-linked mini fab (Trinity Fab), explanations of the progress and occupancy schedules for Yongin's major industrial complexes—including the Advanced System Semiconductor National Industrial Complex in Idong and Namsa-eup, the Semiconductor Cluster General Industrial Complex in Wonsam-myeon, and the Third Yongin Techno Valley General Industrial Complex in Wonsam-myeon—and a question-and-answer session.
Trinity Fab is an advanced semiconductor testbed fab where semiconductor MPE companies can demonstrate new technologies and verify their mass-production feasibility. Trinity Fab will be equipped with about 50 pieces of equipment based on 12-inch wafers, among others.
Because it is built with the same environment as the mass-production fabs of major semiconductor manufacturers, even MPE companies without their own facilities will be able to evaluate their new technologies and prototypes in an environment identical to a mass-production fab.
Trinity Fab is scheduled to be completed in May 2027 at the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster General Industrial Complex in Wonsam-myeon.
The Yongin Advanced System Semiconductor National Industrial Complex, being developed on a site of about 7.78 million㎡ (about 2.35 million pyeong) in the Idong and Namsa-eup area, is being pursued with site development beginning in the second half of this year and the goal of breaking ground on the first fab in the second half of 2027.
The Yongin Semiconductor Cluster General Industrial Complex, spanning 4.16 million㎡ (about 1.26 million pyeong) in the Wonsam-myeon area, will house SK hynix and its partner companies. As of the end of July this year, the site development rate is 91%, and site development is scheduled to be completed in 2027, with part of the first fab to begin trial operation in the first half of that year.
The Third Yongin Techno Valley General Industrial Complex, to be established in the area of 578-1 Jukneung-ri, Wonsam-myeon, is a 260,000㎡ (about 79,000 pyeong) industrial complex being developed in response to the need for additional supply of semiconductor-related industrial sites. It is being pursued with the goal of passing the Gyeonggi Province integrated industrial complex plan review in 2027. If it proceeds as planned, construction and sales will begin in the second half of 2028, with completion scheduled for 2030.
In particular, the city placed a ‘Corporate Grievances and Suggestions Form’ at each seat in the venue, gathering a large volume of opinions from company officials. The suggestions will be answered individually after review by the relevant departments.
